A decade ago, a love story taking place on an historical boat broke an all time record by earning $600,788,188. Yes, TITANIC was and still the greatest movie of all time. That record was expected to be broken by THE DARK KNIGHT mostly because it passed the $500 million bar two times faster than TITANIC – And you wonder why people go on strike.

THE DARK KNIGHT is the most successful Batman with $506,482,539, making it the second highest grossing movie (domestic). Somehow, it had to struggle form time to time compared it’s fellow Superman, but not this time – Remember SUPERMAN RETURNS didn’t do as well as expected – Anyway, I’m glad that Batman has finally taken center stage because to me, he is the best superhero. Compared to the others, he doesn’t come from another planet, got in contact with some chemical, got affected by comic rays or mutated. The guy has absolutely not superpower and has to rely on himself and his human capabilities. Yet again one might argue that his fortune is his special power. – Those toys don’t look cheap.

In total, there have been four people who have played Batman/Bruce Wayne: Michael Keaton (BATMAN, BATMAN RETURNS), Val Kilmer (BATMAN FOREVER), George Clooney (BATMAN AND ROBIN) and most recently Michael Bale (BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT). The Best portrayal was Val Kilmer. This guy looked and felt like both Batman and Bruce Wayne; he really brought the character to life. Worse portrayal was George Clooney, just didn’t feel it.

There are rumors of a third BATMAN with Johnny Depp as The Riddler. The bad part with BATMAN being so popular is that a movie BATMAN BEYOND won’t be coming any time soon.

…and how to turn this situation around.
< /p>

The first time I ever set foot on a movie set was back in 2001 (working as a boom operator on a Sarah Polley short film). Since that day my passion for making movies has only grown and intensified. But one underlining question that continues to run through my mind is…why do most (95% or more) Canadian films tank at the box office.

Ask any Canadian filmmaker this question and you’re sure to start up a very long and never-ending conversation that might leave you wonder what made you want to open that can of worms. Well, I’m going to open the can of worms…just for this article. I’m so proud to be Canadian and our industry produces world-class movies year after year, however, these films just don’t seem to make any money (profit).

I found a great article by Canadian actor, writer and producer, James O’Regan that explores this matter in further detail:

Over the last year or so, a great teeth-gnashing has broken out within the Canadian Movie industry. Producers and their public sector confreres at Telefilm Canada sat down to wonder why no-one saw Canadian movies in the theatres. And now Telefilm has unveiled new money to throw at the problem.

In case you don’t know, Telefilm Canada is an arms length crown agency that has no public accountability via a “value for money” audit unless its own board of directors thinks it needs one – wow, get me on that gravy train, quick! It has generated, over the last 30 years, an industry wholly ignorant of Canadian theatrical film markets and wholly dependent on cultural welfare in the mistaken belief that you just can’t make any dough here a mare usque… I and every American film distribution company on the planet know different. I know because I’ve made money in the Canadian box office, in fact more money on one film than all Telefilm films on average. My short comedy, Edsville – about an innocent young couple that stumbles upon a town of Ed Sullivan impersonators – has a recoupment rate of 20% while the average recoupment rate published in Telefilm’s annual report, year after year, hovers at 2%-ish. I’ve also observed what our Yankee cousins actually do. All you have to do is ask them and they’ll actually tell you – hey, who knew?

So let’s see what it takes to make money and sell movies in Canadian moviedom. Here’s the top 12 for anyone who wants to make $8M on a movie in three weeks in Canada:

Rule # 1: No one knows what sells

Rule # 2: See Rule # 1, no, seriously, memorize Rule #1. I’m not saying this only to make the list apostolic, really. I could make something else up.

Rule # 3: Anything that helps sell is good

Rule # 4: The public will pay to see things or people they really like

Rule #5: Exploit people or things that the public likes

Rule #6: The Canadian Public doesn’t care who directs, writes or produces movies

Rule #7: The Canadian Public pays to see “people” on the screen. Actors are the Product

Rule # 8: The Canadian Public loves Stars

Rule # 9: Make sure you have a story

Rule #10: Comedy Sells (Canadians are masters of comedy)

Rule #11: Do everything you can to ensure the Canadian Public knows about the movie

Rule #12: To the risk taker goes the reward. All else is bunk.

To manufacture and market a Canadian movie to the Canadian market, you have to invest $3.5M. Making the movie costs CDN $2.5M. Marketing the movie for a 100 screen three week release costs CDN $1M.

Let’s take a look at how much money you can make. A 100-screen release can generate up to $16M in revenue. If you control the marketing with your $1M, you get $8M back from your $3.5M investment. Isn’t math for fun and profit great?

If you don’t spend that $1M, you are guaranteed to make nothing at the Canadian box office. Telefilm Canada and its producers don’t spend the money and the results are predictable. Movies funded by Telefilm Canada don’t earn a profit from Canadian box office; they don’t even recoup. Telefilm Canada data shows that Canadian distributors have an average marketing budget per Canadian film of $30,000 – about $970K short of what they need; that this average results from a blend of a majority of films released with an actual budget of less than $10,000. Hoo boy, why aren’t these films making the big bucks, eh?

Let’s say it again for the benefit of Telefilm and its Canadian producers, you must spend $1M regardless of a movie’s budget to have a chance at success.

Had the recent Egoyan opus, The Sweet Hereafter, received $1M in Canadian marketing highlighting the divine Sarah Polley, it might have made some bucks. After all, Polley has a following in Canada – more of a following than Egoyan. Yet it was Egoyan that the producers tried to market, not Polley. The little money that was spent was spent foolishly – see rule #6.

Even a American B movie like Nurse Betty gets the full $1M marketing treatment. Learn the lesson from American distributors who know better; who do spend $1M for each film they release in Canada.

Here’s the best part about making sacks of cash in Canada. Manufacturing, distribution and marketing infrastructure are all 100% in place. All you have to do is come up with a movie to market and some cash to market it with. Hey, pinch me!

Why isn’t it working now? Why is Telefilm’s record so dismal? Public policy has intervened in the movie business only at the level of manufacturing – dolling out wallops of cash to make movies. The new funds maintain that approach. This is simply bad policy and we have bank vaults full of unseen films to prove it.

The only successful public policy intervention on the books are Canadian Content (CanCon) rules for the Canadian music industry. There, public policy told the radio stations (the exhibitors) that they had to play a percentage of Canadian music or else they would be shut down. Today, we have a thriving music industry with big Canadian stars.

Before CanCon in the music industry, Canadian Radio stations played about 3% of Canadian content. After CanCon, it became 30%. Can-con drove the business of the Canadian music industry. It supported the early market-driven development of Canadian music stars. It allowed financial and artistic success in the small Canadian market. Remember there was no success before Can-con rules for the music industry. That Canadian-based market success worked as a springboard to world success for many Canadian performers. It took a while to work but work it did.

Marketing is simple. It just costs money. With its new infusion of funds, it appears that Telefilm will try to mystify the process per usual, read the entrails and divvy up the dough without recognizing rule # 1 – no one knows what sells. That is the mystery and joy of movie selling – ya just don’t know and no-one can give you the magic bullet, i.e. previous box office records, e.g. think how many major studios have hit rock bottom with a series of losers only to bounce back “unexpectedly.”

If public policy is going to intervene, it should get out of movie production and into the marketplace with CanCon for Canadian cinemas. Set a quota, step out of the way and voilà: in five years, we will have a thriving movie business with big Canadian stars. Movie producers are much better at making movies than cultural bureaucrats. I know, call me crazy, but it’s true.

CanCon rules for the Canadian movie business are one means of helping create movies and movie stars without spending a lot of tax dollars. That’s all they do. Canadian movies don’t need it to succeed but if government is to intervene to help reward risk, then that’s the best way and means of intervention, and cheaper too.

For public policy, how bad could it be to issue an “initiative” to exhibitors across the country, insisting that 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% of product viewed in Canadian cinemas must be indigenous Canadian product over a period of years. Then stand aside and let the industry do what it does best: sell movies.

Hey, it ain’t that hard. After all, no one, not even Hollywood, knows what sells. Remember rule #1?

How to turn this situation around?

Now, it’s time for me to add in my two cents worth. We (the Canadian film industry) need more film studios here in Canada. I’m not talking about some glorified soundstage like Filmport but a full-fledged independent movie studio that has 100% control of the financing, development, production and worldwide distribution of their movies. These Canadian movie studios should have only two objectives:

1) To make movies that will entertain millions of people around the world. Focus on giving moviegoers what they want and according to the current all-time North American box office stats…people want to see movies with Action, Animation and Special effects. Success leaves clues.

2) To maximize profits.

That’s it. When that day happens, then we’ll definitely see a lot more Canadian films reaching the #1 spot at the box office. Both domestically and overseas.

The Transformers made a killing in the box office for both of its films. And not only that, it also resulted in the current frenzy in Hollywood to remake all of the popular cartoons that were shown on TV in the 80’s. One such films to be shown is G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, based on the popular G.I. Joe cartoon and toy line.

For those not in the know, the <a rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.tvaddicts.tv/movie/cartoon/G.I._Joe.html”>G. I. Joe franchise is all about the adventures of an elite group of soldiers known as G. I. Joes (what else). The Joes, as they are often referred to, must fight the terrorist organization Cobra and their leader, the mysterious Cobra Commander.

As have been revealed by information coming from the film, instead of focusing on a particular adventure of the Joes, the movie will focus on their origins. It will also reveal how Cobra came into being, as well as the origins of Cobra Commander. This can be seen as a guarantee for a sequel in case the film turns out to be a hit.

But is G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra the next big one to hit the theaters? This one is not yet certain, however, there are some hints that you can bet on. The movie cast list itself proves quite promising. Dennis Quaid heads the list as Hawk, and is sure enough to give the movie at least some impact. However, there are still some reservations among fans about the other cast members. One of the most anticipated characters in the movie is Cobra Commander himself. And with no images of the live action Cobra Commander available yet, fans are still pretty much waiting. On consolation though is that the role will be played by Christopher Eccleston, who played the Doctor in the popular Doctor Who series, which pretty much gives audiences an idea.

Another thing that fans are eagerly waiting for are the costumes, vehicles and fight scenes that the cartoon is very much known for. The promotional photos shown of the character Snake Eyes shows a definitely good-looking suit that is close to the original. On the other hand, preview of the “accelerator suits” were not quite well received by many fans, maybe due to it being new to the franchise.

And then of course, there is the story. Don’t expect critics raving on this one. Movie critics, for some reason or another, abhor anything that is based on a cartoon. Maybe what would make this movie definitely work is a story that will make fans giddy with delight, while still letting the general public make heads and tails about it. And this we won’t see until the film is released.

So is G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra a must see movie? Well, we still have three weeks to wait and see.

Everyone loves sundays and weekends when we get on a chair or on a sofa and staying along with our “half” – to be understanded as our girlfriend or boyfriend, or, hubsand or wife. We all of us, at least one time per week, we get time for watching a movie, a great or just a good one. Then we go and story to anyone known how great or good or bad was that movie.

How do we choose a movie? We go and surf the internet, or maybe kist watching various tops on tv, reading different brochures or just going on a movie shop. Also the movies box office is very important when you choose a movie, isn’t that true? I am sure the answer give will be positive.

A high intervention in our choose, maybe fifty percent is the given movie trailer : from there starts everything. Then we might go and see what other people thinks about that movie and we decide which is the choosen movie.

There are various websites with the proposal to offer a place where people can review (aka posting comments) to one or more watched movies that you have been seen so people would know what is other people opinion about a given movie. That will might help them, when they want to watch a great movie.

For example, on www.watchedmovie.com are posted frequently the Top 10 Movies and their trailers (ussually official trailers).

Also, in that website (www.watchedmovie.com) they are posting a maintained box office of movies, so it is easy as one, two, three to see them in a dedicated page, it’s helping us to avoi searching them in hundreds of websites for each movie.

By the way : there are two sort of people who love watching I movie. But, the question is : where do you prefer to see it ? Well, there are only two responses available. First answer is that people who wants quiet around and gets the movie rendered in their home dvd cinema, and, the second answer is that people who prefer going to a cinema, to see and meet another people, who loves the cinema high quality sounds (sometimes).

What do you think is the best choice? My opinion is that depends of a lot of things such as audience age, the movie kind (action, thriller, comedy) etc., lifestyle, moment disposition and so on.

Post scriptum : To be mentioned, as there a lot of movie genres, a very important fact when some people choose a movie is movie genre: someone would prefer to watch a comedy to make himself laughing, some other would prefer a sience fiction film because maybe they just want to explore the movie creators imagination, someone might want a romance because they are teenagers or want to gain a little bit more of experience in life, and I could continue with an entire list of movie genres and their descriptions.

Dont waste your time : go and make your own research to pickup and start watching a great movie which you’ll love after.
Meanwhile, Major General Henning von Tresckow (Branagh) attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler by smuggling a bomb aboard the Führer’s private airplane. The bomb, however, fails to detonate and Tresckow safely retrieves it to conceal his intentions. After learning that the Gestapo has arrested Major Hans Oster, he orders General Olbricht (Nighy) to find a replacement. After recruiting von Stauffenberg into the German Resistance, Olbricht delivers von Stauffenberg to a meeting of the secret committee which has coordinated previous attempts on Hitler’s life. The members include General Ludwig Beck (Stamp), Dr. Carl Goerdeler (McNally), and Erwin von Witzleben (Schofield). The Colonel is stunned to learn that no plans exist for after Hitler’s assassination.
After a bombing raid on Berlin, he lights upon using the plan Operation Valkyrie, which involves the deployment of the Reserve Army to maintain order in the event of a national emergency. The plotters carefully redraft the plan so that they can dismantle the Nazi regime after assassinating Hitler. Realizing that only General Fromm (Wilkinson), the head of the Reserve Army, can initiateValkyrie, they offer him a position as head of the Wehrmacht in a Post-Nazi Germany and recruit him into the fold. With the rewritten plan needing to be signed off by Hitler (Bamber), von Stauffenberg visits the Führer at his Berghof estate in Bavaria. In the presence of his inner circle, Hitler praises von Stauffenberg’s heroism in North Africa and signs off on the plan without fully examining the modifications.
At Goerdeler’s insistence, von Stauffenberg is ordered to assassinate both Hitler and SS head Himmler at the bunker Wolf’s Lair. At a final briefing, Colonel Mertz von Quirnheim (Berkel) instructs the committee members in how to use pencil detonators. von Stauffenberg also reaches out to General Fellgiebel (Izzard), who controls all communications at Wolf’s Lair, to cut off communications after the bomb blast. On July 15, 1944, von Stauffenberg attends a strategy meeting at Wolf’s Lair with the bomb in his briefcase, but with Himmler not present at the meeting, von Stauffenberg does not get the go-ahead from the committee leaders until the meeting is over. Meanwhile, the Reserve Army is mobilized by Olbricht, unbeknownst to Fromm, to stand by. With no action taken, von Stauffenberg safely extracts himself and the bomb from the bunker, and the Reserve Army is ordered to stand down, believing that the mobilization was training. Enraged, von Stauffenberg goes to the committee to protest the indecisiveness and blames the bungling of Goerdeler, who has been selected to be chancellor after the coup. When Goerdeler demands that von Stauffenberg be relieved, Beck informs him that the SS is searching for him and implores him to leave the country immediately.
On July 20, 1944, von Stauffenberg and his adjutant Lieutenant Haeften (Parker) return to the Wolf’s Lair. To von Stauffenberg’s dismay, he discovers that the conference is being held in an open-window summer barrack, whereas the plotters had intended to detonate the bomb within the walls of the bunker for maximum damage. While his adjuntant waits with a getaway car, von Stauffenberg leaves the briefcase at the meeting. With the bomb armed, von Stauffenberg leaves the barrack for the getaway car. When the bomb explodes, von Stauffenberg is certain that Hitler is dead and flees the Wolf’s Lair. Before shutting down communications, Fellgiebel calls Mertz about the explosion but cannot clearly convey whether or not the Führer is dead.
As von Stauffenberg flies back to Berlin, Olbricht refuses to mobilize the Reserve Army until he knows without a doubt that Hitler is dead. Behind Olbricht’s back, Mertz forges his signature and issues the orders anyway. With Operation Valkyrie underway, von Stauffenberg and his fellow plotters order the arrest of Nazi party leaders and SS officers and begin to take control of Berlin’s government quarter, which will allow them to command the entire Reich. Rumors reach Berlin that Hitler survived the blast, but von Stauffenberg dismisses them as SS propaganda. Meanwhile, Fromm learns from Field Marshal Keitel that Hitler is still alive. The General refuses to join the plotters, resulting in his arrest. When Hitler reaches the Reserve Army by telephone, the SS officers are released and the plotters in turn are besieged inside the Bendlerblock. The headquarters staff flees, but the ringleaders are arrested. Most are eventually tried and executed, while some commit suicide. Von Stauffenberg is executed by a firing squad.

Every single weekend, the top box office movies are ranked in terms of the millions and millions of dollars of generated weekend box office sales. Producers of movies can quickly and easily get a feel for how successful their movie will be overall based on the box office receipts for the opening weekend. In many cases, they can also predict how many DVDs of the movie they will eventually sell based on the opening weekend ticket sales.
<b r />
There is no doubt that Americans do love their movies and many people make their decisions about what they will be doing for their entertainment over the weekend based on the lists of the top movies for the week. And, even with the high cost of ticket prices for the movie theaters these days, millions of people spend the money so that they can see the top box office movies on the big screen.

As popular as movie theaters continue to be, more and more people are enjoying having their favorite movies on DVDs so that they have a library of movie titles that they can choose from. This allows people to pop a DVD into their DVD player at any time and sit back with their feet up to watch the movies that they enjoy the most.

An increasing number of homes these days are now built with extensive home theater systems that allow people to avoid having to schedule their lives around the movie showtimes at the theater. Instead of buying movie theater tickets, they just buy DVDs of the movies they have grown to love and that they would like to watch over and over again or to share with friends and family members.

These home theaters provide people with convenience and privacy so that they can enjoy their movies without leaving their abodes. Many of the high end home theaters include very large screens that rival the screens in the movie theaters and they also have incredibly good sound systems as well that really make the most of the digital quality of the picture and sound.

Not only are the more current top movies on DVD, but there are many older, classic movies being re-released these days on DVDs so that people can enjoy having all of the benefits of this digital technology in their homes. In many cases, movies on DVD even include many extra features, such as alternate languages, interviews with the director and the actors, and even deleted scenes that never made it to the version that was shown in the movie theaters.

Creating a substantial DVD library is a terrific way to have a sense that there is always something on hand for entertainment, regardless of what else is going on in the movie industry. With a wide array of DVDs in your library, you can choose your favorite romantic movie to share with a loved one on a cold and stormy night, unwind from a day filled with stress by kicking back and watching a favorite comedy show, or view whatever other type of movie that will improve your mood and make your day.

Every weekend in America movies are rated by the millions of dollars they bring into the box office. Even with the high costs of tickets, 31 millions dollars is a lot of people in the seats. We are a movie culture.

Many people thirty and over remember the very first movie they saw. Children of the next generation aren’t as likely to remember that first one though, because they will see it when they were babies.

DVDs for babies seems like a silly idea, but researchers are discovering the added color, movement, lights and sounds introduced to a baby’s environment can actually have very positive effects of neurological development. Plug in and watch your child learn and grow.

Make A Genius

For decades it was thought that some kids were born geniuses and some kids weren’t. You either came out of the womb as Einstein or as Joe. With vast improvements in understand both babies and intelligence, researchers now know that many children can attain a high IQ and ability simply by the learning and experiences they develop in their primary years.

To further that, the Disney Company has come out with a line of videos and products called Baby Einstein. The Baby Einstein DVDs feature music, sounds, nature, and babies as they explore things like a child’s first movements, and sound recognition. Encouraging babies to clap, jump and move help begin the kinesthetic process at a very young age. It doesn’t mean your child will do quantum mechanics at 4, but it will add a set of experiences and abilities to their repertoire.

Be Global

With the globalization of both business and education the more languages any person speaks the better off they are. Many schools are developing dual language programs where children can learn in two languages at the same time to make them more fluent in the global village. When is the best time to learn a second language? When you are learning the first one.

The website http://babyclassroom.com features a full line of DVDs for babies that teach language acquisition. Among the languages represented are American Sign Language, Italian, French and Spanish. Using songs and visual word associations these DVDs help a child and the parents learn together.

Speak Local

Language is made of words and the key to development for babies along with the physical abilities is vocabulary development. DVDs have been show to highly improve a baby’s ability to form and speak words early. Bee Smart Baby is a DVD vocabulary builder that teaches words with music, games, visuals and repetition.

A testimonial on the website claims their baby had learned 10 words by nine months of age. By using the DVD along with the constant communication parents have with children, new words (that a parent might not think to teach) can be added to the child’s vocabulary.

None of these DVDs are ever going to win an Academy Award, but it does appear that the movies, our tried and trusted escape, may actually be helping our children after all.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Movie Review - Plot

The movie opens at the New Jersey State Police Academy in the autumn of 2008. Paul Blart (Kevin James), a single father, tries out to be a cop. He does surprisingly well on the obstacle course despite his size, but passes out due to hypoglycemia, and fails the course. He lives with his mother and daughter, who tries to find him a girlfriend on a dating website, as his wife had previously left him, and he had been feeling lonely ever since. He tries to make ends meet as a security officer at West Orange Pavilion Mall. He takes the job very seriously, but receives no respect from the patrons. The next day, Blart is introduced to a new trainee named Veck Sims. Blart takes him on a tour of the mall, teaching him the basics. While patrolling the mall, Blart sees – and falls for – a kiosk owner, Amy. After a few attempts to muster up courage, Blart tries to talk to Amy, but awkwardly asks for hair products instead. Upon their second “meeting”, Blart offers to give Amy a ride to her car on his Segway, and they agree to meet later in a bar where the mall staff are regular patrons. Unfortunately, Blart accidentally gets drunk, and humiliates himself in front of everybody present. Thinking he has ruined his chances with Amy, Blart returns home in low spirits. Later, Blart’s co-worker offers him his daughter’s phone so Blart could call Amy.

On Black Friday, a group of robbers disguised as Santa’s helpers “seize the mall” while Blart is inside the arcade playing Rock Band. While in the arcade, a foreign teen named Pahud calls the cell phone looking for the co-worker’s daughter. Pahud believes Blart is her lover but he explains that he is only borrowing the phone and gives the boy positive advice (basically to just relax about this girl). Pahud begins to admire Blart and they become quick friends. The robbers chase most of the shoppers and staff outside. However, some of the mall staff, including Amy, are taken hostage inside the mall’s bank. Veck reveals himself to be the ringleader, and intends to steal thirty million dollars from the mall by obtaining the codes to the mall’s credit card machines.

The West Orange Police, led by Sgt. Howard, surround the mall, but are unsure of the actual conditions inside. Meanwhile, Blart realizes that the mall has been taken over, and he makes contact with Sgt. Howard. However, the moment he finds out Amy is among the hostages, Blart resolves to take the matter in his own hands. He begins incapacitating the robbers one-by-one, and recording the stolen credit card codes. Outside, SWAT Commander Kent arrives to take control over the operation, and he ultimately dismisses Blart’s actions; Also he has known Blart as Kent has been cruel to him since in high school. He shows that he is much more willing than Sgt. Howard to raid the mall, regardless of the hostages’ safety. While Blart is busy fighting the robbers, his daughter, Maya, arrives at the mall to deliver his dinner, but she is quickly taken hostage by Veck. She then meets Amy, and tells her how Blart really feels about her.

Finally, Blart manages to incapacitate all of Veck’s henchmen, but Veck discovers Maya’s identity, and he tries to force Blart to give him the codes in exchange for her life. Instead, Blart distracts Veck with a mannequin, and tries to free the hostages, but fails. He is forced to give Veck the codes, and Veck escapes the mall with Amy and Maya in tow. Blart follows them, with Commander Kent finally on his side. Blart finds out that Veck is headed to a nearby airport, and ambushes him there, successfully restraining him. However, Commander Kent then attempts to kill Blart and points a gun at his head, and reveals that he was working with Veck the entire time. Fortunately, Sgt. Howard had followed them, and quickly arrests Commander Kent after Blart’s boss, Chief Brooks shoots the gun out of Kent’s hand. Blart and Amy are re-united and Blart admits his feelings for her and she kisses him. Howard offers to let Blart become a full-fledged police officer. Blart steadfastly refuses, saying that his place is helping people in his mall. During the end credits, bonus scenes show Blart and Amy getting married in the mall with all of their co-workers and friends there, including Pahud.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Movie Review - Production

The film began shooting in late February 2008 in Boston. Principal shooting took place at the Burlington Mall in Burlington, Massachusetts after being denied a permit from Willowbrook Mall (Wayne, New Jersey). From late February until mid-April, the mall and its stores were decorated with Christmas decorations, and there was a large prop ball-pit in the main foyer of the mall near the Sears branch, and a Santa’s Village at the opposite end near the Macy’s branch in the same place that the mall usually puts its own Santa’s Village. Signs were placed throughout the mall explaining that this was for filming a movie, in order not to confuse the guests. Interior filming took place mostly at night. The South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Massachusetts was the location of subsequent shooting.

The titular cop is played by Kevin James with Keir O’Donnell as his opponent. Ugly Betty recurring star Jayma Mays plays James’ love interest. The film is directed by Steve Carr.

The Haunting in Connecticut Movie Review – Plot Based on a true story, Lionsgate’s The Haunting in Connecticut charts one family’s terrifying, real-life encounter with the dark forces of the supernatural. When the Campbell family moves to upstate Connecticut, they soon learn that their charming Victorian home has a disturbing history: not only was the house a transformed funeral parlor where inconceivable acts occurred, but the owner’s clairvoyant son Jonah served as a demonic messenger, providing a gateway for spiritual entities to crossover. Now unspeakable terror awaits, when Jonah, the boy who communicated with the powerful dark forces of the supernatural, returns to unleash a new kind of horror on the innocent and unsuspecting family.
Finally after all these years, Leisure Suit Larry seems to have become tired of seducing attractive women (is that possible?) and taken up a new hobby in the movie biz. But alas, now he’s got his nephew chasing tail in Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust.

Players will now to tramp through Hollywood as Larry Lovage, who has a better haircut than his uncle. You’ll work your way through different missions that are set to various movie genres, such as Horror and Wild West, completing missions along the way. Just by playing through the game you’ll unlock 8 different game completion achievements worth 240 gamerpoints, the highest one worth 80 points for completing the whole game.

The rest of the achievements all add a little more fun to the game. Along the way you will be able to earn Larry Awards for a job well done, unlocking three more achievements once you’ve reached 100 awards. Also, there are a couple basic skill achievements such as “Well Hung” for performing 3 consecutive ledge jumps, and “Old Silver-Tongue Award” for completing 4 director games successfully.

Adding to the replayability of the game, you can unlock achievements for completing all mini-games, races, and unlocking all costumes. The best achievements are unlocked just for messing around and having fun, which is great since not many games tend to have these types of achievements. They include “Speed” for using all unlockable costumes in one mission, “Car surfin’” for standing on a moving vehicle for 50 seconds, and “Broadcasting on Top of the world” for reaching the highest point in the studio. And just to rub in how much you’ve played the game, you’ll unlock achievements for walking 100 miles on foot, driving for 400 miles, and driving for a total of 3 hours in the game.

Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust features 30 achievements worth 1000 gamerpoints.

You are the Box Office Smash: The Personal Screenplay

by Gordy Hoffman

Right this very second, in the heart of every struggling, undiscovered screenwriter, in the dark, hidden corner deep within, there is a voice, a clear whisper, saying one thing:

You’re never gonna figure this out.

And this is not referring to the story with its gaping hole, the finale missing a payoff, the hit and miss humor, the flat title.

I’m talking about freedom. The freedom to work as a screenwriter. Compensation for a home for family and a life. The resources to wake up and ply your craft and pay the freight, without obstacle. The chance to see your writing made into pictures, to work with the industry’s best, to fulfill this goal of professional screenwriter. Hollywood success.

Behind this voice is the idea that somehow, some way, you’ll find the hero, or the hook, logline or pitch that will punch your golden ticket. If you could only figure out what the studio wants, if you can only get a solid bead to this game, you know you can write and execute. What is the script I should write to get an agent? What is the one that will sell? It’s not that I don’t know how to write, I know how to write screenplays, I just need to know what they want, even though I think I know what they want, but I don’t think I have the idea that they want. Yeah.

I’m not gonna figure this out, whispers the voice.

Why this uneasiness? Does it originate within ourselves? I don’t think so. But where does it come from? The daily obsession with box office grosses? The news of the seven figure deals to newbies? The endless procession of boneheadedly conceived franchises-in-waiting arriving in the theatres every Friday? People winning Academy Awards for movies you would not be caught dead writing? Recognizing an idea you came up with years ago on your couch, produced with a $130 million budget drowning in CGI?

All these things are but a few of the possible reasons why this seeds unhealthy doubt and confusion in the modern screenwriter. Tracking these forces outside us and beyond our control in an effort to trudge the path to a successful screenwriting career will prove to most to be unproductive and corrosive. Basically, trying to figure out what Hollywood wants will land us in a resentment that makes “giving up” a sane response to the very challenge which used to inspire us. In short, we cannot chase a perceived trend and remember our dreams.

You cannot look at the marketplace and find your voice. You can find ideas, trends, and inspiration there, perhaps, but you can find these things driving in traffic as well. But listening to your voice is the key to creating original, compelling stories.

Your life is your own story. You have a completely unique thread of experience. By allowing yourself to express these emotional experiences, your screenplay, your story, will be different from any other and powerful, as original as your fingerprint.

Why is it powerful? When we have the courage to be specific about what we know about living, we create an authentic world an audience recognizes as the life they are living on planet Earth. This connects your audience to your story. This connection is the foundation of the phenomena o

Why does story mean so much to us? We recognize the triumphs and tragedies of our lives, with all the hilarity and tears. By seeing it, we are validated and it underscores meaning and purpose to living.

If we don’t use what we’ve collected in life in our hearts and spirits, then our story loses its authenticity and the connection the audience should make fails. They do not see themselves, and when they leave the theater, they do not call their friends. When people do not call their friends after seeing a movie, the movie bombs.

When a writer opens their person to their work, when they allow themselves to be vulnerable, to risk exposure of the secrets of their life story, they take a huge step towards creating a screenplay of substantial value, a screenplay with a greater potential of a large number of tickets sold.

This is precisely why art and commerce have remained bedfellows for thousands of years. To look at the relationship between art and commerce as adversarial or incompatible is just plain foolish. Art happens when people invest their spirits in their work without fear, and story is artful when the writing is truthful and the writer is authentic.

And what do we have to be honest about? We can only lie about what we know, and we can only tell the truth about what we know. And that is what has happened to us, our life story. This is what we share.

This is not a pitch to write “what you know.” This is not about writing stories about where you work or where you live. This is about writing about what you felt. You can imagine characters and worlds and actions and speech you’ve never personally experienced, but if you remember to infuse your choices with your emotional and spiritual struggles and victories as a human being, your screenplay will be different in the very best sense of the word.

The question you have to answer is not what does Hollywood want today. The question is how honest of a writer do you want to be. I guarantee you can write a blockbuster, you can write a box office hit. This will happen when you find an audience. And the correct path to this crowd of people is listening to yourself. If you practice, you will develop an inner ear for who you are and what you know and you will become masterful in loading your work with your fingerprints. Writing is personal work. You are the guitar. You are the box of paint. Give of that and your audience will remember why life is good and they will talk of you.

On Friday, June 13, 1980, a young Jason Voorhees (Caleb Guss) witnesses his mother (Nana Visitor) get beheaded by a camp counselor (Stephanie Rhodes) who was trying to escape Mrs. Voorhees’s murderous rampage around Camp Crystal Lake. Approximately thirty-years later, a group of vacationing friends—Wade (Jonathan Sadowski), Richie (Ben Feldman), Mike (Nick Mennell), Whitney (Amanda Righetti), and Amanda (America Olivo)—arrive at Crystal Lake on a camping trip, and to find some weed that was planted in the woods. As Mike and Whitney explore the woods, Jason (Derek Mears) begins to kill the rest of the group one-by-one. Jason also kills Mike, but instead of doing the same to Whitney he decides to kidnap her because she resembles his mother at a young age.
Six weeks later, Trent (Travis Van Winkle), along with his girlfriend Jenna (Danielle Panabaker), and their friends Chewie (Aaron Yoo), Chelsea (Willa Ford), Nolan (Ryan Hansen), Bree (Julianna Guill), and Lawrence (Arlen Escarpeta) arrive at Trent’s summer cabin, which sits on Crystal Lake, unaware of the events that occurred a few weeks prior. Also in town is Clay (Jared Padalecki), who has come to Crystal Lake searching for his sister Whitney. Clay eventually makes his way to Trent’s cabin, where Jenna agrees to help him look for his sister on the other side of the lake. As Clay and Jenna search for clues to Whitney’s disappearance, Jason kills Nolan and Chelsea out on the lake. Clay and Jenna reach the old Crystal Lake campgrounds, where they witness Jason hauling a dead body into one of the abandoned camp houses.
Clay and Jenna run back to warn the others about Jason, who arrives shortly after them and cuts the power to the cabin. After killing Chewie and Lawrence, who ventured outside the house, Jason sneaks inside the cabin and kills Bree. Trent, Clay and Jenna escape the house, but Trent is killed shortly after when he reaches the main road. Jason then chases Clay and Jenna back to the campgrounds, where Clay discovers Jason’s lair and finds his sister chained to the wall. Clay frees Whitney, and all three attempt to escape as Jason arrives. The trio find an exit, but Jenna is killed before she can get out. Jason comes after Clay and Whitney, who use Jason’s love and memory of his mother to distract him long enough to stab him in the chest with his own machete. Afterward, Clay dumps Jason’s lifeless body into the lake, but before he and Whitney can leave Jason bursts through the lake dock and grabs Whitney.

Friday the 13th Movie Review - Casting
Stuntman Derek Mears was hired to portray Jason Voorhees at the recommendation of makeup special effects supervisor Scott Stoddard. Mears’s pleasant demeanor had the studio worried about his ability to portray such a menacing character on screen, but Mears assured them that he was up to the role. Jared Padalecki signed on as the lead male who investigates what happened at Crystal Lake, with Amanda Righetti taking the female lead. Amanda Righetti had not read the script when she was initially offered the role. Wanting to be a part of the Friday the 13th franchise from the start, Righetti admitted that she was sold on the idea of acting in the film after she did read the script. Danielle Panabaker, Jonathan Sadowski, Travis Van Winkle, Aaron Yoo, Julianna Guill round out the rest of the cast. Nana Visitor was cast as Pamela Voorhees, with Caleb Guss hired for the role of a young Jason.
The casting process was difficult for producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form on this film, more so than it was on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as Friday the 13th had more young actors to contend with and consistent casting/recasting all the way until filming began. Fuller and Form’s first challenge was the size of their cast. Fuller and Form had thirteen young actors in Friday the 13th, whereas in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre they only had five. The pair had to continually recast parts to find the group that worked best together. This recasting process extended all the way to the start of film. Richard Burgi, who was cast as the sheriff, did not sign on until twelve hours before he had to start filming his scenes.

You simply can’t miss to watch a show that has won eight Tony awards in the year 2003, including the best musical! “Hairspray” has a straightforward story that easily gets into the heads of college going kids. This 2 hour 40 minute entertainer depicts the 60’s culture and revolves around an ambitious girl with long hair!

This girl with long hair has an even bigger passion – dance. She participates in a local TV dance show titled “The Corny Collins Show” and wins a spot. Overnight, this simple girl is transformed into a wild teen celebrity. However, the big challenge starts now. Can a passionate dancer and a fashion freak be able to defeat the princess of the show? Can she impress the dashing Link Larkin? Can she join together in a television show without having to part with her long hair? Lots of questions and the show “Hairspray” answers them all.

The star cast of this incredible show includes a whole lot of fine actors that have contributed in making “Hairspray” refreshing, vibrant and full of life. They include John Pinette, Tracy Turnblad, Edna Turnblad, Haylie Duff, Shannon Durig, Amber Von Tussle, Wilbur Turnblad, Stephen DeRosa, Penny Pingleton, Aaron Tveit, Caissie Levy, Link Larkin, Todd Michel Smith, Tevin Campbell, Darlene Love, Seaweed J. Stubbs, Isabel Keating, Motormouth Maybelle, and Velma Von Tussle.

The remarkable creativity behind this show lies with the behind-the-scenes team that has looked after each detail to make this show more effective and impressive. Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan are the writers of the book “Hairspray”. The show is directed and choreographed by Jack O’Brian and Jerry Mitchell, respectively. Music is given by March Shariman. Lyrics are done by March Shariman and Scott Wittman. The sets are designed by David Rockwell and the costumes are designed by William Ivey Long. Lighting and sounds are provided by Kenneth Posner and Steve C. Kennedy, respectively.

“Hairspray” is all about dance and the struggle to make it big through it. Therefore, there are bound to be some fabulous dance moves here. The stage is energized by terrific choreography and outstanding performance of each character. Although this Broadway show will be made into a movie that’s due to release in July, watching the characters come live on stage is an altogether different experience. There are times when the cast reaches out to you after the show and signs autographs!

So, do not waste time. Book your tickets fast or you will be left envying the crowd that gets to go inside the theater. There is a lot of uncertainty of getting tickets at the box office, not mentioning the long line you have to wait in. The best way is to order the tickets by dialing the number of ticket providing services or go online. This way you will be sure of getting a seat at the theater.

Watch a young girl turn her passion into a success! Watch “Hairspray” on stage and you will know the stuff dreams are made of!

Not only was ‘feel good’ film Mamma Mia a box office huge success, but it has also contributed to an increase in the tourism industry in Greece.

After the crowds had seen the movie- which was released last summer- a lot of people became interested in buying property in Greece. According to The Move Channel the number of potential buyers has skyrocketed by 120 per cent following the release of the movie !< /p>

The movie was shot in a beautiful and virtually unknown island- Greek island of Skopelos where there is not even an airport !

Since the release of the movie more and more internet users have been looking for property investment opportunities in Greece. There has also been a dramatic increase in the number tourists who are looking for a low cost holiday destination, where the sun is often shining and the temperature is warm.

Greece takes advantage of a pleasant climate and a very low cost of living- two very important factors which is attracting many tourists and potential buyers.

The potential buyers can get a very profitable property investment because property prices are relatively low-cost. In addition dynamic tourist industry means that, you can rent out your property during the long season- from April to October- and get a high return of your investment.

According to Paul Simmons, Easyjet UK General Manager, the low cost of living and the affordable property prices will encourage you to invest in Greece, even if the world economy is in a recession.

The 112 minutes documentary on Michael Jackson by Kenny Ortega features Michael Jackson, Travis Payne, Kenny Ortega, Michael Bearden, Orianthi Panagaris, Judith Hill, Stacy Walker, Mo Pleasure and Tony Testa .The movie features backstage footage of Michel Jackson’s rehearsals, in Los Angeles and it tries to show glimpses of MJ’s personal and professional life, before his death.

Will Michael Jackson new “This Is It” movie break new box office records in cinema history?
YES – or – NO
(win a $1000 Walmart gift card for voting)

Michael Jackson died on June 25 this year at his home, in Los Angeles, after suffering a cardiac arrest and it was the time when he was preparing for his comeback after a gap of almost twelve years. Jackson was booked for fifty shows at London’s Millennium Dome and his death ended the shows before it opened. His fans, who have been eagerly waiting to see his shows, couldn’t believe the death news. There has been lot said about Jackson’s confusing public image, which is much fractured and in pieces.

The documentary “This Is It” shows an assembled view of the footage of Jackson’s rehearsals for the upcoming shows. The scenes have been taken from three different cameras and the sequences have been merged to make a single show, which has catchy tunes and it succeeds in rediscovering Jackson’s aura.

The movie shows Jackson working hard as an artist trying to get perfection from every participant of the show and himself. It shows boyish side of the singer and it even reveals the health issues because whenever MJ speaks “subtitles” are shown to depict what he is saying. Ortega shows emotional Jackson who always speaks “with the love.”

Will Michael Jackson new “This Is It” movie break new box office records in cinema history?
YES – or – NO
(win a $1000 Walmart gift card for voting)

Michal Jackson’s “This Is It” movie will become quite a spectacle for fans indeed.

If you are too lazy and too cozy in your sofa at home in order to actually go to the movie theatre for a change, here is an idea that could help get up faster and even rush to the local movie theatre: you are missing a lot of great movies! What kind of movies? Well, blockbusters, Box Office movies, what else? But what does this movie guru, the Box Office say? Well, here are some ideas regarding the movies that are doing quite well these weeks, movies that you shouldn’t miss:

Last weeks, the Box Office seemed to be dominated by light comedies, the kind of comedies that make fun of silly, goofy characters found in silly, goofy situations. And the perfect examples are: Are We Done Yet? and Blades of Glory. The first one, well, it is a comedy remake; and how are comedy remakes? They are usually worse than the originals. But hey, if you want to see a family moving to the countryside and trying (and mostly failing) to renovate their home, then this is the movie for you.

As for Blades of Glory, all we can say that it is the story of two male skaters that participate (together, as a couple) at pairs figure skating competition. That basically says it all about the awkwardness and embarrassing situations, plus the silly humor.

OK, now up to more serious movies. Let’s move on with the horror and thriller ones, the ones that bring chills up our spines: Disturbia (which is now conveniently placed on the very top of the Box Office), Fracture (this week’s runner up) and Vacancy. What can we say about these movies is the fact that they are actually worth seeing, without exception. Why? Well, Disturbia for the intriguing plot, Fracture for Anthony Hopkins and Vacancy, well, Vacancy is pretty scary. And even more, each of them seems to follow quite an unpredictable story, the kind of stories that manage to keep the audience in suspense from the beginning till the end.

What else can we see in the Box Office these weeks? Well, we can observe that In the Land of Women is doing pretty well; one of those romantic wannabe movies that present us a young, sensitive and kind guy, his tumultuous inner life and relationships with women. You could say pass to this one. We can also observe the highly expected 300, one of those war movies that are highly recommended for their special effects and impressive action scenes. If you are a fan of war movies, this one is definitely worth watching.

So now you know what you can find in the Box Office. You have plenty of movies to choose from, from cheesy romantic ones to goofy comedies and from war movies to a great deal of high class thrillers. Enjoy!

Fans of the hit anime Dragon Ball will soon get their long held wish courtesy of 20th Century Fox and if it goes off without a hitch, it will be in theaters around the beginning of summer 2008. What are we talking about?

A live action, English movie based off of the hit manga and anime series that has swept Japan and the United States since the 1980’s when it was first developed by Akira Toriyama. The series has spawned two additional TV shows since its debut, including Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, and numerous card and video games.

Up and coming actor Justin Chatwin, who appeared in War of the World, will end up getting to play Son Goku and the villain of the series will be played by James Marsters, who appears as Spike from the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The movie will follow the story of the alien Goku who, like so many superpowered beings these days, it seems, gets sent to the Earth to take it over. Like Superman, he changes his mind once he discovers what his species intent for him was and decides that he will not only live on the planet as a normal person, but also protect it from other aliens who seek to take it over.

When the series debuted in Japan as a manga, it was mainly seen as a comedy/fantasy series, since the first 134 chapters of the series were filled with all kinds of humor, even if some of it would be considered a little crude for American child audiences, such as humor involving women’s panties.

When it was released into the United States, some name changes were in order, since the name of one character was Mr.Satan and since it was seen as a children’s series, it was changed to Hercules. Alcohol, sexual innuendoes, and drugs were also edited out of the series.

All in all, we are not sure what to expect from a live action Dragon Ball movie in the United States. It is known that children and adults alike will flock to see the movie, but the content of the film, other than a very likely PG-13 rating, is currently unknown.

It is not likely to be as censored as the Dragon Ball manga was when it was released in the United States, but in order to keep its roots intact, there is likely to be a fair amount of objectionable content that some parents may not want their smaller children to see.

Movie posters generally can serve two purposes after their days as in-theater displays are over. One, they can be valuable collectibles, no different than baseball cards, stamps or comic books. And just as with those widely collected items, a poster’s condition has much to do with its value. And two, they make spectacular wall hangings, and can add a dash of style and pizzazz to your game room, office or den. (When used only as décor, and not considered an investment, reprinted film advertisements are probably sufficient.)

No matter which group you fall into, knowing the difference between a collectible movie poster and a reprint is important. After all, if you’re hoping to attain an item that will increase in value, it must be an original print. If, on the other hand, you only want to spruce up your off-campus apartment, there’s no sense spending money on a pricier collectible when an equally attractive reprint would fit the bill.

What makes a film print collectible? How is the quality of a print determined? How can I preserve a collectible once I’ve obtained one? If you are new to the collecting game, you likely have many questions that you need answered before you make your first purchase. Below, you’ll find a few tips to help get your collection started on the right foot.

Original vs. Reprint: Learning the difference

To determine whether something is considered collectible movie art, you must know the answer to two key questions: Was it produced, printed and distributed by a movie studio solely for the purpose of in-theater advertising? Was it originally intended for use only as a movie advertisement and not as an item meant for public consumption? If you can answer “yes” to both of those questions, you’re likely dealing with a movie poster that has value.

Certainly other factors come into play (and we’ll address some of them shortly) but the basic criteria have been met. Movie art materials that have value are created for studios by a select group of lithographers, sent to theaters as advertising materials, and later either returned to the studio or destroyed. They aren’t printed in huge numbers with the goal of being sold to the public later. In fact, the print run of each movie poster is limited to only what is necessary for theaters and distribution centers and later returned for credit. Because of this, there are fewer in circulation, which in turn is what makes them more valuable.

Making the Grade: Understanding what a print is worth

Grading systems used to determine the value of movie poster art are similar to grading systems used for other collectibles. Rips, bent corners, faded colors, staple holes or pinholes, and any other blemishes will detract from its market value. Most collectors will use standards set by the Motion Picture Arts Gallery to help figure a print’s value. Ranging from “Near Mint” to “Fair”, the value of a print can be wide-ranging.

Prints graded in “Near Mint” condition were hardly ever used, if at all, boasting colors that are still vibrant and no mars of any kind. The MPAG scale declines as far down as “Fair”, which describes posters that show signs of wear, perhaps are ripping at the folds, and could have damaged borders. Even prints in this condition have value – the poster is still rare after all – but the market will knock points from its worth.

Of course, even after the condition of a print is ascertained, estimating its value requires additional legwork. You can’t simply rely on a dealer’s word as to its worth. Conduct extensive research to determine how film prints for the same movie and of like condition are being valued. And remember, the more rare a piece, the more valuable it becomes, so if you have a difficult time locating artwork of a particular film, that’s a good sign that its value might be higher.

Quality Control: Preserving your investment

No matter how great an investment you make in a movie poster, it won’t be a sound investment if you don’t care for the item. Preserving the quality of the paper is critical, but it isn’t difficult to do with some basic instruction. One of the most preferred materials used to preserve valuable documents is uncoated polyester film. DuPont’s Mylar D and ICI Corp’s Melinex 516 are two of the most popular brands. By sealing the movie posters, these products will protect your investment from the paper-destroying effects of moisture, pollutants, oils and acids.

Other preservation methods, less popular because they render the movie posters less usable, include using acid-free boards and boxes. Many collectors also have their posters professionally deacidified before storage to add additional years of life.

Size matters: Understanding the shapes and sizes

While the term “movie poster” is generically used to refer to any marketing materials used to advertise a film, actual studio-released work typically comes from a catalog of certain sizes. Below are the names of the most common sizes and where you’re likely to first see each advertisement.

1 Sheet: 27” x 41” (27” x 40” after 1980); most often seen in theater lobbies and in display cases in and around theaters (i.e.: bus stations, train stations…)

2 Sheet / Subway: 41” x 54”; used in subway stations

3 Sheet: 41” x 81”; used as large lobby displays

6 Sheet: 81” x 81”; used as small billboards

12 Sheet: 108” x 144”; used as medium billboards; very seldom used with new releases today

24 Sheet: 108” x 246”’ used as large billboards

30 Sheet: 118” x 265” used as large billboards

There’s something oddly satisfying about seeing a big-budget movie flop. Whenever we hear about these ambitious, special effects-laden extravaganzas going down in flames we get an odd feeling of schadenfreude.

But why is this? Does it stem from the fact that we feel manipulated, almost exploited, by the movie industry? Perhaps. After all, movie studios make a lot of coin from tweaking our emotions, be it through adrenaline-filled action films or mawkishly tear-jerking weepies.

Perhaps the best reason for our guilty pleasure at seeing a big-budget movie flop is the fact that we feel like we won a battle. We caught Hollywood trying to pull a fast one by releasing a bad movie and trying to hype it anyway—and we weren’t fooled. Gotcha. Better luck next time.

That’s all well and good, but there have been many excellent movies throughout the years that, for whatever reason, failed to make it big at the box office. Hey, just because a movie didn’t make a lot of money on its release doesn’t make it bad—after all, Citizen Kane barely made enough to cover the cost of a wooden sled on its original release. It wasn’t until its re-release and television syndication that it became perhaps the most critically acclaimed movie of all time.

So, here’s a look at two movies that didn’t live up to expectations on their release, but later went on to disprove the critics:

Fight Club

Despite eventually becoming an enormous cult hit, Fight Club performed poorly on its release. With a budget of $63 million it took just $37 million at the US box office. On its release the movie drew mixed critical reactions, partly due to its violent nature. One high profile critic described it as “a film without a single redeeming quality, which may have to find its audience in Hell”, and the flop cost the Entertainment Chief of 20th Century Fox his job.

Despite a tepid reception, Fight Club went on to turn a small profit at the global box office before exploding in popularity in the DVD market, becoming one of the best-loved films of the 90s. Today you’d be hard pressed to find a young man’s DVD collection that didn’t boast a Fight Club DVD.

Shawshank Redemption

One of the most well known box office flops of recent years, The Shawshank Redemption, based on a Steven King novella, came up against the might of Forrest Gump at the box office. Audiences preferred Hanks’ feel good vehicle over this depressing prison drama and, although Shawshank garnered 7 Oscar nominations, the box office take was pathetic.

This all changed once the movie was released on video. Bolstered by the Oscar endorsements Shawshank became the most rented video of 1995, going on to become our 2nd favorite movie of all time according to an Internet Movie Database poll.

The moral of the story, it seems, is that you should probably think twice before dismissing a movie based on its box office success. Movies are always at their most enjoyable when seen on the big screen, so you shouldn’t miss out on the chance to see them as they were meant to be seen simply because the audiences can’t tell a Hollywood gem from fools gold. After all, these are the same people who made Ernest Goes to Jail the number one movie in its opening week. Would you trust them?
